Fear and Loathing in Chicago

Baseball Share
Over past years, decades, okay lets be honest, century, the Chicago Cubs have been the most difficult team in sports to watch as a fan. But now, if one can put it into perspective, how difficult can it be for an actual player on the team? In outfielder Milton Bradley’s case, he claimed that he felt like a prisoner in his own home.

For Milton Bradley, who played only one season with the Cubs last year, feared for his life while playing in Chicago. The fans took it to whole level with Bradley by sending him hate mail and yelling obscenities everywhere he went. He explained that the people in Chicago take it to the extremes when rooting for their teams.

"Well, I mean unless you go out there and you're Superman -- you're Andre Dawson, you're Ernie Banks, you're in the Hall of Fame -- then it's going to be tough," Bradley said. "People are just the way they are.”

Not only was he struggling to just play the game of baseball, but his life at home was what made him worry the most. What drew the line for Bradley was when his 3-year-old child was called a derogatory name at school. He explained that a toddler should not just have the knowledge to say something like that, so it must be coming from the child’s home.

During the interview, Bradley told ESPN that he’d rather have a torn up knee and go through rehab than play in Chicago and go through that again.

It disturbs me that it was not only Bradley receiving this hate from Chicago. Bradley explained that former Cubs players, Latroy Hawkins and Jacque Jones, received the same kind of treatment when they played a few years ago, so it was not just Bradley.

The Chicago Cubs have chosen to withhold comments on Milton Bradley to ESPN, which makes one wonder if some of the team felt the same way about Bradley.

Wow I did not know this. And to have other players he claims to go through the same bull is unbelievable. Maybe there some truth to this. Hope to see more about this in the future from you. Keep me updated. Good job.
