After being released by the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday, it has been reported that wide receiver Laveranues Coles has interest in coming back to the New York Jets. With the Jets planning on signing a wide receiver or selecting one from the NFL Draft this year, taking Coles back sounds enticing.
The Jets' general manager, Mike Tannenbaum, has texted Coles and has spoken with his agent as well.
"I have all the respect in the world for Laveranues. He's as tough as they come," Mike Tannenbaum said.
Coles, 32, had a terrible-- maybe his worst-- season with the Bengals last year. Cincinnati’s quarterback Carson Palmer and Coles were not on the same page all season. Coles caught 43 receptions for 514 yards with 5 touchdowns for the 2009 season.
Now, if the Jets sign Coles for the third time in his career, he will not be their number one receiver. It was the same as in Cincinnat, where he found himself in the shadow of Chad Ochocinco. With Braylon Edwards and Jericho Cotchery as their number one and two wide outs, where would Coles fit into this offense? He obviously still has the ability if the Jets are reconsidering him, but will he take a step down in his role as a number one receiver?
Nice article! I think it would be a great addition for the jets. Your right he would have to take a smaller role but I think he could be a big help on third downs and in the red zone. My only fear is that cotchery will be the one who suffers. In my opinion he tends to disappear behind other WRs. All in all good article, hope to read more from this author.
It's got to be frustrating for Coles that he couldn't capitalize on his big contract with the Bengals.
People always like tout teams that have a great tandem of receivers, and on paper, Cincinnati should have had a great duo. Unfortunately like you said, Palmer and Coles just didn't gel completely.
It'd be interesting to see if the Jets do bring Coles back on board. And will T.O. take his place in Bengals' stripes? To be continued...
