President Barack Obama welcomed the 2009 national champion University of Alabama football team to the White House Monday only about two months after their thrilling victory over the University of Texas.

As is tradition in Washington, Obama was given an Alabama football jersey with his name printed on the back along with the number “1.”

Alabama hadn’t won a national championship in 17 years making this experience a relatively new one for them. In school history however, they have won 13 championships. According to cbsnews.com, Obama said that the newest national championships would have made former Alabama head coach Bear Bryant proud.

“Congratulations to all of you,” said Obama as he concluded his comments according to cbsnews.com. “The best of luck next season. I know spring practice starts on Friday -- woo, man. Next Friday, huh? So enjoy these last few days off. And congratulations to all of you for just an extraordinary season. Roll Tide.”

The Crimson Tide went undefeated during the 2009 season. In fact, they haven’t lost a regular season game since Dec. 6, 2008. Alabama opens the 2010 regular season Sept. 4 in Tuscaloosa against the San Jose State Spartans.
