Despite the struggles that the men’s basketball program have faced at the University of Connecticut this season, Coach Geno Auriemma led the women’s team to their 70th straight win on Sunday. Each of their wins have come by at least 10 points with an astonishing average winning margin of more than 32. This current streak ties the program’s own record for the longest winning streak in NCAA women’s basketball.
Auriemma told the Associated Press that he would be excited about the streak even if that was where the team stopped. He stressed the importance that the focus should not be so much on the streak, but more on the chase for the conference tournament title and the team’s seventh national championship.
“Let's say we win tomorrow and lost Tuesday, what are the kids going to do, go to half court and put their fingers up and say, We won 70, 71?,” said Auriemma.
The Huskies took down Syracuse by the score of 77-41 to achieve this great milestone. Tina Charles tied her career 34 points and Maya Moore contributed 16 points, 14 boards and seven assists in the game.
