The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Chris Chelios, 48, on Tuesday. Chelios will stay with the Chicago Wolves, an American Hockey League affiliate, if he clears waivers.
Chelios signed a two-way NHL contract that pays him $700,000 in salary in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL.
"Who knows, a couple of injuries there -- they're kind of close of getting in the playoff race -- [I might] get lucky and get in a few games," Chelios said. "It's been a good year [with the Wolves], and if this is where it ends, it's been a good time."
He has played in 44 games with the Wolves this season. He has totaled five goals and 16 assists and ranks second in the league with a plus-35 rating.
Chelios is a 25-year NHL veteran playing for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. He ranks 10 all time in scoring for defensemen, won the Norris Trophy and Stanley Cup three times and is a four-time Olympian.
