Canada Comes out on top in Thriller to cap off Vancouver Games

There was a world of hype surrounding the US vs. Canada gold medal matchup in men’s ice hockey and it certainly lived up to it. Gaining the interest of nearly the entire world, even President Obama placed a bet on this game, which he came out on the wrong end of. In front of the sellout crowd of 18,000 at Canada Hockey Place, the Canadians took home the gold medal defeating the Americans 3-2 in overtime.

Zach Parise scored a goal for the US, tying the game at 2-2 with just seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime where international sensation, Sydney Crosby, would score the game winning goal for the Canadians.

“You know, going to see a lot of kids grow up now, wishing they were Crosby winning the gold medal,’’ said Canadian defenseman Chris Pronger. “You win for your country, and to do this, especially on home ice, to see the flag go up, hear the anthem, it’s pretty special.’’

It was certainly a special moment for our neighbor to the north to say the least. Although this is Canada’s eighth gold medal in men’s hockey, it goes down as one of the most memorable as they come out victorious in front of the home crowd in such gripping fashion.

However, it cannot be a fairytale story for both sides. As the US accepted their silver medals, fans could not help but notice the looks of disappointment on each one of their faces.

“We’ll play them anytime, anywhere. Unfortunately, this is winner-take-all. Hey, we split two games with them and they won the only one that really matters,” said American Erik Johnson when asked what would happen in a seven game series between the two teams.
